The freedom of railroading, part 1
The last couple of years I’ve gamemastered a few role-playing games, including Mage the Awakening and Dungeons and Dragons. Some of my campaigns have been typical “hack’n slash”-affairs, with stereotypical supporting actors, plots and scenery. A typical example of railroading. Other campaigns have been more elaborate, with complex characters, murder mysteries, multiple factions for the players to side with, and several leads to pursue at the same time. Basically much more player-driven.
Guess what? Railroading has won in the fun department. Every time. I’ll give my thoughts on why in the next couple of posts. So stay tuned.
